Natalie Hughes, founder of Canned Fashion.
Writer, illustrator and street style icon Natalie Hughes is the face and brains behind her fashion blog Canned Fashion. I caught up with her to find out more about how she made her website such a success.

How did you start your career and what are you working on at the moment?

I am currently working as a freelance writer, social media consultant and illustrator, and I run a blog, Canned Fashion. Previously, I worked at NET-A-PORTER and SheerLuxe.com, and found my fashion footing at the likes of Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar.

When did you launch Canned Fashion and what was your original aim and hopes for the site?

I launched Canned Fashion in 2009. I’d been an avid blog reader and I wanted to get in on the action, as well as needing a place to showcase my illustrations.

What sets your blog out from the crowd?

I’d like to think my illustrations add something a little extra to my blog.

How useful has your blog been in raising your professional profile?

I think it’s definitely helped, especially when it comes to my illustration work. I’ve found several clients via my blog over the years, which never ceases to amaze me. Canned Fashion has also connected me with some of my favourite brands, some of which I have ended up consulting and writing for.

Do you monetise your site in any way? And could you explain how this works?

I use RewardStyle, which enables bloggers to monetise outfit and wish list posts. I’ll link to an item I’m wearing via a monetised link – if someone clicks and buys, I earn a little commission. I am also a member of the AOL Blogger Network, who handle the ads on my site.

Which of your posts do you find to be the most popular?

Good old-fashioned outfit posts – I know that as a reader, these are kinds of posts I adore on my favourite blogs.

How do you see Canned Fashion developing over the next few years?

The blog has taken a backseat while I have been kickstarting my freelance career, but I hope to be able to dedicate more time to it in the future – I would like to incorporate more lifestyle posts, such as cooking, interiors and general London fun.

Which other blogs do you enjoy and take inspiration from?

Kris Atomic (her illustrations and photography are simply sublime), Lolita Says So (Emma’s photos are totally dreamy) and Vanessa Jackman (street style at its best), to name but three.
